How to take care of dogs in the winter?

As a dog owner, it is your responsibility to take care of your pet, especially in the winter. In the winter, they required more attention. A lot of people think that they have fur, so they would not feel the winter. That is completely wrong.

In this blog, we will provide you with tips that you need to follow for your pet to happily survive the winter.

Diet for your dog

In terms of food, they need protein-rich foods because they use more energy to stay warm in the winter. They need more food, but keep in mind not to overfeed them.

For that, include foods that are fish-based because they will have more protein in them, and chicken-based foods will also work. Another Adult dog food or puppy food item that is really good for your dog is honey because it can improve your overall immunity.

In the winter, hydration is important, and your dog will not feel thirsty, so you might need to use wet food instead of dry to keep them well hydrated.

Keep them indoors

In the winter, you should keep your dog indoors; however, they also need to go out for a walk. So you might need to change the timing of your walk when the temperature is not the coldest. Early afternoon or late morning would be ideal.

If your dog loves to play outside, then you should go along with them, and when you feel like going in, you should take your dog along with you. If he’s out in the yard by himself, make frequent checks to make sure he isn’t getting too cold.

Moisturise

In dry and cold winters, moisturization is very much needed. If you don’t want your dog’s skin to be dry and flaky, he should be moisturised as well. Coconut oil is best for the winter.

You need to massage it into your dog’s skin and coat. A coconut oil massage will not only relax your pet but also give their coat a lovely, glossy finish. With that, it also helps small scrapes heal and eases bite allergies. And one teaspoon of Virgin Coconut oil into your pet’s food can really improve the condition of their coat.

Comfortable bedding

Dogs have an affectionate nature, so at night they want to snuggle you. However, it is best if they have their own bed as well. You need to make sure their bed is comfortable enough that they can have a good night’s sleep.

You can add a warm blanket to their dog bed. If your dog can take a nap all around the house, then you should use a pet mat for their comfort. Pet mates are easy to move and keep your dog off the chilly floors.

No cold bath

Always use warm or lukewarm water for their bath, and make sure the water has the right temperature. Taking a bath is an important part of grooming. Properly wash them with shampoo, and after that, do not forget to use conditioner.

But after the bath is properly done, there is your dog. Use hair dryers for complete drying because if you do not properly dry them, they might get sick.

Change the drinking water often

When you put water in their bowl, the water will get really cold, and then your dog will feel like drinking it. And hydration is critical, particularly in the winter, when pets do not feel as thirsty as they do in the summer. So, it is advised to replenish the old water with fresh water every 2 to 3 hours.

A health checkup in the winter

A health checkup is important, and it is even more important for arthritic dogs, who may have a more difficult time in the cold. Therefore, it is crucial that you keep a close eye on his physical training. If your pet is experiencing joint pain, visit your vet for advice on pain relievers and other treatments.

Their fur’s maintenance

Normally, pets have their fur to keep them warm in the cold. Their fur acts as a natural heater for them. In winter, you should take more care of their fur. This involves not shaving their fur off and massaging it with coconut oil. After the bath, dry their fur properly, and also comb their hair.

Use woolen clothing

When you take your dog out for a walk, make sure to put on a lightweight dog sweater. That sweater will keep them warm, so pick the right one for them that feels cosy and comforting to them.

If you do not use appropriate winter protection, then it might affect their health. A warm and comfortable jacket will allow your dog to go about his or her daily activities in the cold winter months without jeopardising their health.

Do not leave your dog in car

This is not just for the winter; in all seasons, you should never leave your dog in the car, even for a short period of time. They might not have proper ventilation, and if you keep your car running for them, that may cause some kind of accident. So never leave your dog unattended in the winter or in any season of the year.
